Capt. John W. Moore, In Memoriam

With sadness, the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (ASU BIOS) has received news of the passing of our Advisory Board Member, Capt. John W. Moore.

Since the mid-1970s, Capt. Moore has worked as a consultant for ASU BIOS (then BBSR), providing local expertise to marine superintendents and facilitating communication between the Marine Operations Department and various Bermuda Government agencies. Additionally, he has served as the second officer aboard the R/V Weatherbird, R/V Weatherbird II, and R/V Atlantic Explorer. Capt. Moore was also affiliated with Meyer shipping company as the Vice President from 1968 to 2012.

Moore was deeply involved in various events, including the dedication of the new dock in 2006, Marine Science Days, Campus Cleanups, and more. He generously donated his time three days a week to the ship operations group in recent years. Moore provided invaluable assistance to the R/V Atlantic Explorer with customs clearance and other shipping relations for many years. We are truly grateful for his generous contributions to BIOS over 40 years. In 2020, the BIOS Board of Trustees unanimously voted to award Captain John Moore with the Richard Gorham Award for his long-standing and valued support, as well as his extraordinary service to BIOS.

Capt. Moore recently said, “The most enjoyable part about being at BIOS are the officers, crew, and the professionals I work with while serving ocean science”.

Capt. Moore will be sorely missed by the Marine Operations department, the crew of the R/V Atlantic Explorer, and by the wider community on campus. He was very dear to us all. The Board, leadership and staff of ASU BIOS extend our sincere condolences to Capt. Moore’s family and friends.
