Financial Aid
Each year BIOS receives awards from various sponsors; some are available to all qualified, academically strong candidates while others are awarded based on the country or university where you are studying, or on citizenship. Please take the time to carefully review the eligibility requirements for each of the bursaries listed below.
Summer Course Bursaries
To apply for a bursary towards summer course fees, please complete the "Statement of Needs and Qualifications for a Bursary" section of the course application form. Bursaries can be requested to cover course fees (which include room, board, and tuition) but not for travel costs. You are encouraged to supply as much detail as you feel necessary to adequately describe your situation. BIOS assesses applications based on level of education, academic merit, and financial need. Once the applications have been reviewed, BIOS will make award determinations and notify you of your standing. During and/or after your time at BIOS a member of the Development Office will contact you to gather information regarding your work and experience at BIOS, in order to inform and thank the BIOS donors that have provided the bursary funds.
BIOS summer course bursary funding is available to assist students of all nationalities. Students enrolled in Canadian colleges/universities, and Canadian students enrolled in universities outside Canada but who intend to return to Canada after graduation, will also be considered for bursaries from the Canadian Associates of BIOS (CABIOS). Bursaries from the U.K. Associates of BIOS are available to ocean science and marine studies students based in the U.K. Please note that students requesting bursary funds on their summer course application form do not need to apply for funding from these donors specifically; all eligible students will be considered automatically.
The Dalhousie-BIOS Experiential Learning Fund provides financial support for Dalhousie University students to participate in BIOS summer courses. Dalhousie students should apply directly to Dalhousie. For more information about how to apply for summer course bursaries through the Experiential Learning Fund, please refer to the Dalhousie-BIOS Bursary Application.
