Robots on the Rise

April 27, 2018

In Bermuda, students of all ages—primary school through college—have a unique opportunity to develop and demonstrate a range of skills, from math to group problem solving, by participating in the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Bermuda Regional Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Challenge. The annual event, held this year in late March and hosted by BIOS with lead donor support from HSBC Bank Bermuda Limited (HSBC), is part of BIOS’s Mid-Atlantic Robotics IN Education (MARINE) program.

MARINE ROV Angelfish Challenge Winners

Underwater Robotics Challenge This Weekend!

March 20, 2015

This Saturday, come cheer on the students competing in the 2015 ROV Angelfish Challenge! Mid-Atlantic Robotics in Education at BIOS. Each team will be piloting their own ROV through a series of underwater challenges at the National Sports Centre. The event opens to the public at 9am – hope to see you there!

Students Test Their Underwater Robots

March 28, 2015

Students put their technical skills to the test yesterday as part of an island-wide competition to design the best underwater robot.

Collaboration Benefits Island’s Students

February 26, 2019

A novel partnership between BIOS’s Ocean Academy and the University of Delaware (UDel) this winter gave dozens of local teachers and students the opportunity to learn about marine robotics and how they are used to explore the oceans.

Calling All BIOS Volunteers

March 29, 2019

Like to snorkel? Interested in supporting emerging marine engineers? Volunteers from BIOS and the Bermuda community are needed to assist on Saturday, April 27 from 8:00a.m. to 3:00p.m., as more than 30 teams of school students test their mission-tasked Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) during the annual island-wide robotics challenge.

When is a Jellyfish Not a Jellyfish?

A team of scientists from Yale University traveled to BIOS in May to study the Portuguese man o’ war, a frequent visitor to the waters around Bermuda during spring and early summer.

Long-lost U.S. Air Force Bomber Located in Bermuda

The crash and subsequent disappearance of a U.S. Air Force B-24 bomber nearly 74 years ago has been resolved with the discovery of wreckage in Bermuda by a team of scientists, students, and underwater robots.

Teachers On Board with MARINE: Mid Atlantic Robotics IN Education

December 17, 2014

This past month, sixty primary and middle school educators from the Bermuda Union of Teachers came to BIOS to participate in a professional development workshop focused on marine robotics.  The workshop involved PVC pipes, car batteries, foam noodles, propellers, and a race against time as participants were challenged to build their own Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) for launch into the Sargasso Sea. Successful ROVs are neutrally buoyant and can be maneuvered through the water to complete tasks, mimicking the professional classes of underwater robotics used around the world to collect data for science and industry.
