Through the ASU BIOS Educational Expeditions program, biology and marine chemistry students gained hands-on field experience in Bermuda’s marine environments, applying classroom concepts through field research, laboratory investigations and environmental monitoring.

In July, a group of 13 international undergraduate and graduate students traveled to the ASU BIOS campus to participate in the first-ever Marine Molecular Ecology (MME) Summer Course. Participants learned how to utilize molecular and genomic approaches to address and discuss complex scientific questions, focusing on microbial communities in Bermuda’s mangrove ecosystems. 

Earlier this year, in a new partnership with Ontario Tech University (OTU), the University Programs team at the ASU Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences hosted 12 students in the first-ever ASU BIOS Spring Semester Program.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy charts a sustainable future through hands-on environmental education alongside their experiential field course

The transformative power of education lies not only in the knowledge gained within the classroom walls but also in the experiences that broaden young minds beyond their familiar surroundings. Such is the case for a group of 23 students from Polaris, a K-12 grade school in Anchorage, Alaska (U.S.). In May, these ambitious learners embarked on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to Bermuda, where they had the unique opportunity to visit the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences. Over the course of 10 days, these curious young minds and their educators were immersed in a variety of interactive activities that took learning beyond the confines of their Alaskan classroom.
