Bill Curry joined BIOS in 2012 as President and CEO. Following his retirement in 2025, he was elected Chair of the Board of Trustees.
Before joining BIOS, Curry was a Senior Scientist in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and served as Director of the WHOI Ocean and Climate Change Institute (OCCI). Over the course of his career, he twice held appointments as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation’s Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (1988–1990; 2011–2012). At WHOI, he chaired the Department of Geology and Geophysics (1995–1999) and directed OCCI during two terms (2001–2005; 2007 onward).
Curry also contributed extensively to national service, including six years on the Ocean Studies Board of the National Research Council and participation in numerous NSF and NOAA advisory and review panels. In recognition of his scientific contributions, he was elected a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union in 2004.
