Nick is a chemical oceanographer whose multidisciplinary research draws upon a “systems” understanding of marine biogeochemistry. He investigates marine carbon and nutrient cycling and ecosystem function by integrating the study of the physical, chemical and biological parameters that impact them. Using this approach, Nick is able to acknowledge and investigate the many variables that are critical to understanding the carbon cycle within the context of a changing climate on Earth. His current research includes projects that span the global ocean, from pole to pole and from the atmosphere to deep-ocean waters.
Nick received his PhD from the University of Southampton in 1995 where he studied the physical and biological controls of the oceanic carbon dioxide system in the Sargasso Sea. In addition to serving as the Director of Research and a Senior Scientist at BIOS, he is Professor of Ocean Biogeochemistry at the University of Southampton, National Oceanographic Centre, Southampton, UK and an adjunct full Professor at the University of Delaware Center for Marine and Earth Studies.

Ocean biogeochemical cycling of carbon, nitrogen and dissolved organic matter; physical and biological processes influencing ocean-atmosphere gas exchange of carbon dioxide; coupling between ocean biogeochemical processes and climate variability; ocean carbon cycling in the Arctic Ocean and surrounding polar seas; the influence of ocean acidification on coral reefs and calcifying organisms.
