Max Unterberger joined ASU BIOS in 2024 as a Marine Science Technician, bringing expertise in mechanical engineering and ocean technology. Originally from Germany, Max completed a B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering at Offenburg University and an M.Sc. in Environmental Monitoring and Oceanography at Aix-Marseille University and Toulon University, specializing in climate modeling and marine systems.

Max’s career spans hands-on roles across various marine environments, from coral research in Australia to glider deployment in the South Atlantic and missions in the Southern Ocean. His technical skills include CAD design, machining, welding, and ocean instrumentation, honed through diverse fieldwork and autonomous vehicle projects. Before joining ASU BIOS, Max worked independently on custom vehicle restorations and other mechanical projects.

At ASU BIOS, Max supports research operations aboard the R/V Atlantic Explorer, overseeing technical instrumentation and field deployments. Max looks forward to immersing himself in Bermuda’s marine landscape and contributing to ASU BIOS’s research initiatives.
