Jonny Chapman graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2019 with a BSc in Ocean Sciences, specialising in physical oceanography. He first came to Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences to attend the Modern Observational Oceanography summer course. He returned to BIOS in 2020 as a research intern, where he analysed turbulence data from autonomous gliders to investigate vertical exchanges of nutrients and carbon in the Sargasso Sea.

Jonny joined BIOS full-time in 2021 and is now a Research Specialist leading day-to-day operations for the Mid-Atlantic Glider Initiative and Collaboration (MAGIC) program. He manages the glider laboratory, including vehicle preparation and maintenance, sensor servicing and calibration, mission planning and field deployments, and near data processing and quality control. Jonny regularly works at sea aboard the R/V Atlantic Explorer and BIOS coastal vessels, supporting the deployment and recovery of gliders and other oceanographic instrumentation. His work supports sustained, high-resolution observations of physical and biogeochemical variability in the North Atlantic.
