Emma graduated from the University of Plymouth in 2020 with a BSc in Marine Biology and Oceanography. After working as a Research Assistant and Scientific Diver for the Smale Group (Benthic Ecosystems and Environmental Change) at the Marine Biological Station in Plymouth, Emma pursued a career as an Ocean Scientist and Diver for the British Antarctic Survey. She spent a year in Antarctica working on the Rothera Oceanographic and Biological Timeseries (RaTS). Depending on sea ice conditions, she performed weekly oceanographic measurements (CTD casts to a max depth 500 meters and water sampling) with a hand winch from a small boat or sledge. Other duties involved year-round scientific scuba diving for the Biodiversity, Evolution and Adaptations team.
Emma joined ASU BIOS as an Oceanographic Research Technician for the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) in May 2024. Her primary role involves taking part in monthly BATS research cruises onboard R/V Atlantic Explorer and the subsequent analysis of phytoplankton pigments from seawater samples by means of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). She also performs dissolved oxygen analysis and processes primary production rates by measuring radiocarbon (14C) activity with liquid scintillation counting.
