Kyla has had a passion for the ocean environment since an early age, having spent most of her summers volunteering and, later, working at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum, and Zoo. She has been diving since the age of 14, giving her 20 years diving experience. She became a PADI dive professional in 2011 and worked as an instructor for a commercial dive operation in 2014. Kyla joined BIOS in 2015 as an Ocean Academy educator and dive instructor. She instructed many student divers through the Waterstart Program and taught science data collection methods through the Marine Science Internship program. In 2020 she took on the role of Dive Safety Officer.
Kyla attended Warwick Academy and joined Class Afloat for her final year, which included spending 10.5 months sailing on a tall ship, visiting numerous countries, and circumnavigating the globe. She spent the next year at Bermuda College before heading off to the University of Tampa where she graduated with a BSc in environmental science with a focus on marine biology. While at the University of Tampa, Kyla went on many study abroad courses which took her to Costa Rica, Honduras, and the Galapagos Islands.
After graduating, Kyla undertook a five month internship with Oceans Research in Mossel Bay, South Africa, studying the area's great white shark population. Upon returning to Bermuda, she worked for Fantasea Diving and Watersports as a dive instructor and eco tour guide.
